Delegation

Delegation is the process of assigning tasks or responsibilities to team members while giving them the authority, resources, and trust to complete the work. Importantly, leaders remain accountable for the outcome.

Effective delegation is not about offloading work - it's about using your team's skills and strengths efficiently, developing capability, and building confidence. When done well, delegation can increase productivity, empower team members, and free leaders to focus on strategic priorities.

How to implement

  • Match tasks to the right skills and experience levels.

  • Provide clear instructions, expectations, and deadlines.

  • Offer the necessary resources and support.

  • Allow autonomy while being available for guidance.

  • Follow up and provide feedback on the completed work.

Key considerations

  • Delegation is a skill — it improves with practice.

  • Avoid micromanaging; trust the person to do the job.

  • Be prepared to accept different (but still effective) approaches.

Note

Be aware of system delegations including myHR access and responsibilities.

Why it's important

  • Frees up time for higher-priority work.

  • Builds team capability and confidence, including pathways to succession.

  • Improves efficiency by matching tasks to strengths.

  • Encourages employee ownership and engagement.
