Diversity and Inclusion

Queensland Health is committed to fostering diverse, inclusive and respectful workplaces where all employees feel valued and supported.

Diversity recognises the unique backgrounds, experiences, perspectives and characteristics that people bring to the workplace, while inclusion ensures everyone has the opportunity to contribute, participate and feel a sense of belonging. As a leader, you play an important role in creating an environment where differences are respected, barriers to participation are addressed, and all employees can thrive.

Diversity and Inclusion

  • Diversity is the range of differences people bring to the workplace, including culture, age, gender, disability, language, experiences, perspectives, skills and ways of thinking.

  • Inclusion is creating an environment where people feel welcomed, respected, valued and able to participate fully, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Key considerations

  • Diversity and inclusion are related but distinct concepts.

  • A diverse workforce does not automatically result in an inclusive workplace.

  • Employees may experience barriers to participation that are not always visible.

  • Different perspectives can strengthen decision-making and innovation.

  • Inclusion is influenced by everyday behaviours, team dynamics and workplace practices.

  • Creating a sense of belonging contributes to employee engagement and wellbeing.

As a leader

  • Foster a respectful workplace where differences are valued and diverse perspectives are encouraged.

  • Ensure employees have fair and equitable access to opportunities, development and participation.

  • Encourage all team members to contribute ideas, feedback and viewpoints.

  • Recognise and address behaviours that may exclude, disadvantage or marginalise others.

  • Consider diverse needs and perspectives when making decisions and implementing change.

  • Encourage your staff to update their Diversity data in myHR [Employee Self Service > Personal Details > Diversity.]
