Applying systems thinking

Indicators you are applying systems thinking:

You are starting to ask different questions about problems:

  • "What are the elements of this system, and how are they interconnected?"
  • "What is the purpose of this system?"
  • "Is it working well or producing poor results?"
  • "How might we make it work better?"
  • "What is the wider context that this system operates in?"
  • "What mental models and structures are driving the emergent patterns and events I am observing?"

You become aware of linear logic exclamations like:

  • "All we need to do is..."
  • "We just need more staff!"
  • "We need more money!"

You seek diverse perspectives to help create a deeper understanding of problems.

You approach problems with a mindset of humility and curiosity, rather than a knowing expert.

You start looking for and identifying leverage points to implement change.

You see change as something to be nurtured, while exploring for unintended consequences.

You act with patience and celebrate failures as opportunities to learn about the system.
