Palliative Care Education Framework
The Palliative Care Education Framework (PCEF) is an initiative that aims to provide users with an individualised and targeted approach to building their capability in providing specialist palliative care.
The PCEF provides access to a continuum of learning opportunities to support capability development of allied health, nursing and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Profession workforces in palliative care.
The PCEF is a 'living' matrix which consolidates access points to National, State and private sector open access education offerings and resources and sequences them into a pathway for optimal learning.
Any costs associated with courses on the PCEF will be the responsibility of clinicians.
Navigation
The courses, training options and resources in the PCEF can be filtered by users to enable them to select the right course to meet their individual needs at any point in time. It also enables learners to plan their learning over time to enhance understanding and foster knowledge, skills and emotional capacity to deliver palliative and end-of-life care.
Target audience
For clinicians new to palliative care it is recommended to commence at Core Learning on the learning continuum and work through relevant topics at each level suitable to individual learning. Experienced palliative care clinicians can navigate the matrix sequentially across the learning continuum for education and resources suitable to individual learning.
For educators and or leaders and managers of palliative care teams, the matrix is a tool that can assist in identifying opportunities to support individual and or team capability development against the National Palliative Care Standards and or the learning continuum.

Transition Support Program
To support enhanced palliative care and specialist palliative care skills for nurses, mapping of palliative care content in existing Queensland Health Transition Support Programs has been undertaken (Mapping Paper) with the following foundational palliative care resources being developed for the Transition Support Program:
-
Palliative Care Elective Module for Registered Nurses and Midwives and
-
Palliative Care Elective Module for Enrolled Nurses.
Access to both modules is available through your local facility Acute Care Transition Support Program Coordinator or Nurse Educator.
CAISY AI Simulation
This program/course is accessed via The Learning Library. If you have not previously accessed this resource, you may be required to complete some questions to help support you use the platform. This should only take a few minutes and will give you access to many more resources to support your professional development.
To support communication skills in a palliative care setting, where clinicians are often faced with facilitating sensitive conversations surrounding palliative and end-of-life care, two CAISY AI Simulations have been developed.
CAISY AI Simulations provide learners with a safe space to practice having sensitive conversations whilst receiving real time feedback to highlight what learners did well and areas for improvement.
The two simulations that have been developed for palliative care are:
-
Introducing Palliative Care with Empathy
-
Supporting a Caregiver Through End-of-Life Conversations
Learners can personalise their simulation experience by adjusting the scenario mode and AI behaviour before commencing the conversation.
The scenario mode allows learners to engage in the conversation by switching conversation style to suit learners' individual confidence levels in having these conversations. Learners can opt to receive real-time guidance for the duration of the conversation, or practice using their own words to progress the conversation and be given ratings and feedback at the conclusion of the scenario.
The AI participant behaviour selection considers behaviour types which will alter the difficulty of the conversation. These behaviour types look to mimic different reactions clinicians may encounter when engaging in these conversations, from accepting behaviour types through to dismissive.
