Sexual harassment

Queensland Health is committed to providing safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces that are free from sexual harassment. Sexual harassment can have a significant impact on an individual's health, wellbeing, safety and ability to work effectively.

As a Leader, you play a critical role in preventing inappropriate behaviour, promoting respectful workplace conduct, responding appropriately to concerns, and fostering a culture where employees feel safe to speak up and seek support.

Sexual harassment

Is any unwelcome sexual advance, unwelcome request for sexual favours, or other unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that could reasonably be expected to offend, humiliate or intimidate a person.

Sexual harassment can occur:

  • In person, online, by phone, email or messaging platforms.

  • Between employees, managers, contractors, patients, consumers or visitors.

  • As a one-off incident or repeated behaviour.

  • Regardless of a person's gender, age, position or employment status.

Examples may include:

  • Inappropriate comments, jokes or remarks of a sexual nature.

  • Unwanted physical contact.

  • Intrusive questions about a person's private life.

  • Sharing inappropriate images or content.

  • Repeated unwanted attention or advances.

Key considerations

  • Sexual harassment can occur regardless of a person's role, gender, age or employment status.

  • Sexual harassment is determined by how the behaviour is experienced, not by the intention behind it.

  • Some employees may be reluctant to report concerns due to fear, embarrassment or uncertainty.

  • Early action can help prevent harm and escalation.

  • Confidentiality and privacy should be maintained wherever possible.

  • Creating a respectful workplace is an ongoing responsibility, not only something addressed when concerns are raised.

As a leader

  • Model respectful and professional behaviour at all times.

  • Promote a workplace culture where inappropriate behaviour is not tolerated.

  • Respond promptly when concerns are raised or inappropriate behaviour is observed.

  • Follow Queensland Health policies, procedures and reporting requirements.

  • Support employees to access appropriate resources and support services.

  • Seek advice from Human Resources, or other support services when required.
